Chew Valley is a world-class destination known for its stunning natural beauty and exceptional fishing opportunities. Anglers from around the globe are drawn to this location for its picturesque scenery and the unmatched quality of fishing experiences it offers. The lake is renowned for its impressive trout population, with sizes and conditions that are second to none. Anglers have the chance to succeed using various fishing methods and fly patterns, adjusting their tactics to meet the lake's ever-changing conditions. The lake itself is relatively shallow, with an average depth of 14ft and a maximum depth of 37ft. The surrounding area was once fertile farmland, now providing an ideal habitat for the thriving aquatic life that contributes to the excellent trout fishing found here. To make the most of your fishing trip, it is advisable to seek advice from the knowledgeable staff at Woodford Lodge for guidance on fishing spots, fly selection, and techniques. For those looking to explore the lake by boat, there are 32 motorboats available for hire. Advance bookings are recommended, especially on weekends, with reservations accepted on a two-rod basis. However, unreserved boats can be booked on the day for afternoon or evening fishing sessions. Additionally, a specially designed Wheely Boat is available for anglers in wheelchairs, with advance booking required. Safety is a top priority, with all boat fishermen required to wear lifejackets, which can be borrowed upon request. Certain restrictions are in place, such as no anchoring from the Dam to the line of yellow buoys between the North Shore and The Sailing Club, and no entry into a restricted area marked by white buoys in front of the Stratford bird hide. Bank fishing is permitted along much of the lake perimeter, with wading allowed as well. Anglers must be cautious of deep holes, ditches, and soft mud throughout the lake. Fishing restrictions include no fishing in front of picnic areas, the dam, Herons Green embankment, or in front of the Sailing Club. By following these guidelines and making the most of the resources available, visitors to Chew Valley can enjoy a truly exceptional fishing experience.
