Sweethope Lough is known for its large, hard-fighting rainbow trout, with some reaching up to 15lbs or more. The fishery is also home to blue trout, and plans are in place to add to the Brown Trout population. The lough is the headwater of the Wansbeck River and offers anglers of all skill levels the chance to hook into a true fish of a lifetime. With two loughs totaling 152 acres and 20 boats available for use, anglers have plenty of space to explore and fish. During competitions and club days, it is recommended to book a boat in advance to ensure availability. Pike fishing season runs from November 1st to March 1st, while fly fishing for trout is available year-round, weather permitting. Rules at Sweethope include guidelines for juniors, the use of specific tackle, and the handling of fish. Live bait and sacks are banned, and anglers must have suitable unhooking equipment and a minimum line strength. Proper fish handling techniques are also outlined, including the use of barbless hooks, wire traces, and immediate striking to prevent deep-hooking. Visitors to Sweethope can enjoy not only excellent fishing opportunities but also the expertise and hospitality of Chris, the dedicated fishery manager.
